Essential oils are the aromatic part of the plant, they contain several active principles which have physiological effects and express “the vital power”of the plant which resonates with our vibration..

Chimically they are formed by alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, phenols, terpenes, sesquiterpenes, they are used in the plants like growing and reproducing hormones. (i.e the pheromones are sed for the scent which attracts pollinators insect, that is the defense mechanism which protects the plant).

Essential oils can be extracted from all the parts of the plant. Flowers produce a relaxing effect in the body; resins and  barks produce warming essential oil which stimulate the movement of the liquids. Green leaves, which contain chlorophyll are refreshing, the roots absorb land properties, they can have a stabilizing effect, the fruits which mature with sun energy have a opening and energizing effect.

Methods of Production

You can extract essential oils in several ways: cold sqeezing, hyperbaric extraction with Co2, solvent extraction, but what Bio Thai is concerned, regards steam distillation

The steam distillation utilizes the steam extractive capacity in order to extract the aromatic part of the plant. The plant is positioned on a net while water is boiling: when the steam pass through the plant the volatile components are sweeped away, they condense in a serpentine and they become distilled water and volatile components. The mixture is collected in a tank where distilled water (heavier) goes to the bottom while essential oils, (lighter)comes to surface.

At this poin essential oils are separated by distilled water and collected in another tank. The slowest is the distillation process better is the quality of the oil.

In the next article we will talk about Care and Selection of Essential Oils and Delicate Harvest.
